Paul Broca and Sir Francis Galton were the primary scientists who thought of measuring intelligence. The thought was to measure the human skull to determine intelligence — larger the skull, smarter the person. Another scientist Wilhelm Wundt used introspection to determine intelligence. In , psychologists Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon designed a test for kids who were struggling at school in France.

This test was designed after the French Ministry of Education asked the researchers to design a test which may distinguish mentally retarded children from normally intelligent children. The test was designed to determine which children required individual attention and formed the idea of an intelligence test. The test was named the Simon-Binet intelligence test. In the late 19th century, researchers hypothesized that cognitive abilities like verbal reasoning, memory and visual-spatial skills reflected an underlying general intelligence or g factor.

Simon and Binet designed a series of tests to determine each of those abilities and mix the result into a single score. Questions were adjusted for every age group and a child’s score reflected how they performed relative to others their age. Dividing someone’s score by their age and multiplying the result by gives an IQ score. Simon and Binet thought the abilities their test assessed would reflect general Intelligence. But, till date, there is no single specified definition of general intelligence.

Alfred Binet and the History of IQ Testing

Interest in intelligence dates back thousands of years. But it wasn’t until psychologist Alfred Binet was commissioned to identify students who needed educational assistance that the first intelligent quotient IQ test was born. Although it has its limitations, and it has many lookalikes that use far less rigorous measurements, Binet’s IQ test is well-known around the world as a way to compare intelligence. The government had passed laws requiring that all French children attend school, so it was important to find a way to identify children who would need specialized assistance.

Simon and Binet thought the abilities their test assessed would reflect general Intelligence. But, till date, there is no single specified definition of.

The Turing test , developed by Alan Turing in , is a test of a machine’s ability to exhibit intelligent behaviour equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human. Turing proposed that a human evaluator would judge natural language conversations between a human and a machine designed to generate human-like responses. The evaluator would be aware that one of the two partners in conversation is a machine, and all participants would be separated from one another.

The conversation would be limited to a text-only channel such as a computer keyboard and screen so the result would not depend on the machine’s ability to render words as speech. The test results do not depend on the machine’s ability to give correct answers to questions , only how closely its answers resemble those a human would give. The test was introduced by Turing in his paper, ” Computing Machinery and Intelligence “, while working at the University of Manchester Turing, ; p.

Turing’s new question is: “Are there imaginable digital computers which would do well in the imitation game? In the remainder of the paper, he argued against all the major objections to the proposition that “machines can think”. Since Turing first introduced his test, it has proven to be both highly influential and widely criticised, and it has become an important concept in the philosophy of artificial intelligence.

The question of whether it is possible for machines to think has a long history, which is firmly entrenched in the distinction between dualist and materialist views of the mind. For we can easily understand a machine’s being constituted so that it can utter words, and even emit some responses to action on it of a corporeal kind, which brings about a change in its organs; for instance, if touched in a particular part it may ask what we wish to say to it; if in another part it may exclaim that it is being hurt, and so on.

But it never happens that it arranges its speech in various ways, in order to reply appropriately to everything that may be said in its presence, as even the lowest type of man can do. Here Descartes notes that automata are capable of responding to human interactions but argues that such automata cannot respond appropriately to things said in their presence in the way that any human can. Descartes therefore prefigures the Turing test by defining the insufficiency of appropriate linguistic response as that which separates the human from the automaton.

But the most crucial predictor of executive success has nothing to do with personality or style. How can hiring managers flag individuals with such smarts? Historically, the only reliable measure of brainpower has been the standard IQ test, which is rarely used in business settings because of the specific subjects it tests for—math, reading, and spatial reasoning—and because of its multiple-choice format.

Despite its shortcomings, the standard IQ test is still a better predictor of managerial success than any other assessment tool companies currently use, Justin Menkes argues. He describes how to formulate questions to test job candidates for their mastery of these subjects, offering several examples based on real situations. Knowledge questions, such as those used in standard behavioral interviews, require people to recite what they have learned or experienced; intelligence questions call for individuals to demonstrate their abilities.

And the questions should not be designed to ask whether the candidate has a particular skill; they should be configured so that the candidate will have to demonstrate that skill in the course of answering them. How could they recognize such smarts? Historically, the only reliable measure of such brainpower has been the standard IQ test, which, for good reasons, is rarely used in business settings.
